Charitable giving rose more than 11 percent across the country in 2004, according to a recent report from the Chronicle of Philanthropy, which might lead some people to believe the piggy banks at America’s charities are brimming with money.

But one need look no further than the sparsely filled shelves at Brazosport Cares, The Food Basket and other area food pantries for evidence there still are needs to be met.

The efforts in the Houston area to help evacuees from Hurricane Katrina and those affected by Hurricane Rita have left area pantries scrambling to help families who rely on them for regular meals."
