Haiti quake American donations - chicagotribune.com

Haiti quake American donations - chicagotribune.com: "Local charities are grateful, but still they worry that the American public's historically short attention span will make it difficult to sustain that generosity through a reconstruction effort that will last years. They also fear that the burst of giving might displace philanthropy needed to take care of crises closer to home.

Charities already are struggling. Patrick Rooney, executive director of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, said 2008 saw the largest one-year drop in giving ever, with charities down at least 10 percent from their projections. Late last year, an institute survey of charities found 'serious concern' about their fundraising potential in 2010."
