Americans quake contributions top $130 million

ISLAMABAD, March 09 : The hearts of Americans sank when they learned that a devastating earthquake had struck Pakistan on October 8. Touched by the tragedy half a world away, they did what Americans do at such times – they gave. More than $130 million in contributions have been tracked to philanthropic organizations from U.S. individuals, corporations and foundations to Pakistan earthquake relief, a U.S embassy said on Thursday.

The amount, calculated by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, represents total U.S. private contributions to the Asian earthquake relief and recovery efforts in Pakistan by U.S. individuals, corporations and foundations."

KRT Wire | 03/08/2006 | Crusades may be over, but Graham is still going strong: "Crusades may be over, but Graham is still going strong
BY JIM JONES
Knight Ridder Newspapers

We might have guessed it. Billy Graham isn't fading into the sunset just yet.

He said in June that the New York crusade would be his final one. But the legendary evangelist is scheduled to speak in New Orleans this month. Graham, if his health permits, will address pastors and the general public at his son Franklin Graham's 'Celebration of Hope' rally March 11 and 12 at New Orleans Arena, next to the heavily damaged Louisiana Superdome.

Vocalist George Beverly Shea will be there, as well as Cliff Barrows, Graham's longtime song leader.

I was happy to hear the news. This gathering will give us a chance to hear the powerfully straightforward message of Billy Graham in person again and also listen to Shea's incomparable version of 'How Great Thou Art.'"

Katrina Cash Crisis Continues

Katrina Cash Crisis Continues: "atrina Cash Crisis Continues

The need to continue giving aid to the victims of Hurricane Katrina must remain a priority ...

It's now months after the American Gulf Coast was devastated. Billions have been spent in relief, but billions more are needed. Such is the scope of a storm that ranks among the most severe in modern North American history.

To this day, residents' lives are still wrecked. Vital services are still wanting. Homes and businesses remain unrepaired. The effort to do so is not lacking; far from it. The hard fact is that the resources available are still spread too thin."

New UN fund to speed global disaster response | Reuters.com: "UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations next week launches a new global emergency fund to provide swifter relief to victims of natural disasters, but with far less money on hand than the $500 million it had hoped to raise.

The Central Emergency Response Fund will have just $188 million when it opens for business, which is nonetheless a significant improvement over an existing U.N. standby loan facility of $50 million.

Donations to the new fund, which will be able to make grants as well as loan money, have come from 19 of the 191 U.N. member-states.

But some wealthy nations including the United States, Japan, Australia, Italy and Canada have yet to make pledges."

Swarthmore faculty and students are continuing to support the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts through a recent Mardi Gras beads fundraiser and a service trip to New Orleans set for Spring Break.

Over the past two weeks, McCabe librarians have directed the Mardi Gras beads fundraiser to benefit the Southern University of New Orleans (SUNO) library, their partner library in the Adopt-A-Library program. At $1 a strand, revenue from the Mardi Gras beads sales totaled nearly $800. The beads were on sale at the bookstore, libraries and coffee bars across campus. In addition, members of the Directed Relief Committee are in the process of organizing a group of students to help ongoing cleanup efforts in parts of New Orleans afflicted by the storm."

WASHINGTON - The White House will make 125 recommendations for how the government could have reacted better to Hurricane Katrina in a report to be released Thursday on the catastrophe and the Bush administration's response to it.

The findings are expected to be critical of the government's response, but not as harsh as a separate House report issued last week, according to a senior administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity. The House study faulted the White House for not getting involved earlier in the planning for and aftermath of the Aug. 29 storm"

BJORK - INDONESIA CHANGED BJORKS CHARITY OUTLOOK: "INDONESIA CHANGED BJORK'S CHARITY OUTLOOK

Icelandic singer BJORK has changed her outlook on large-scale charity fundraising following her emotional visit to Indonesia last month (JAN06).

The ALL IS FULL OF LOVE star had always been suspicious of centralised organisations because she felt too much money was wasted before it reached the needy.

The 40-year-old says, 'I always felt a bit funny about it because I didn't know where the money was going and the people come and I don't know them.

'And (you hear) scandal stories about charities where most of the money pays for champagne to help with celebrities.'

Katrina mobile homes immobile in Arkansas
I've lived in New Orleans 13 years now, a Yankee who got sucked in by the smell of gardenias in February and couldn't pull away.

My house is in the part of New Orleans we've started to call the 'sliver by the river,' the narrow strip along the Mississippi that didn't flood. So I'm typing this from the study of my 100-year-old home, with its hardwood floors and high ceilings, feeling lucky and guilty and numb.

Rafat, a final-year Pharmaceutical Management student at the University of Bradford, said: 'We were amazed that we managed to raise so much. We were initially aiming for around two or three thousand, but to get ten thousand was incredible.

'We mainly fundraised through out society contacts at the University but we also got very generous donations from members of the Bradford community. "

The Covenant House has always been bustling with teens, young adults and babies. But in October, the youth homeless shelter on the outskirts of the French Quarter reached out to small nonprofits and state offices damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Traveler’s Aid Society of Greater New Orleans, a nonprofit tasked with preventing homelessness in New Orleans, is working at the building as is the Tulane Hospital Adolescent Drop-in Center, the Metropolitan Human Services District, the Office of Family Support, the Food Stamp Program and Tulane Hospital’s walk-in clinic.

Stacy Horn Koch, Covenant House executive director, decided to invite the groups because she believes all nonprofits benefit by such collaboration.

“I hope this will last,” Koch said. “There’s a real opportunity for nonprofits to work together. There’s no room for people to have turf wars.”"
