Albany Student Press - UAlbany aids disaster-ridden nations
Albany Student Press - UAlbany aids disaster-ridden nations: "Chile, with such disasters in the country’s recent history, was better prepared and saw less devastation and considerably smaller death tolls (approximately 1,000). Chile’s economy is also strong enough (in spite of the earthquake, growth is still expected to be about 8 percent this year, and a good credit rating and a low inflation rate of 1.5 percent means it will be easy to get loans) that the government there should be able to finance relief efforts without foreign donations.
The response to Haiti here at the University of Albany has been substantial: after seven weeks of fundraising, the student body has donated $26,429 to UAlbany’s Haiti Relief Fund, with the University Auxiliary Services matching one-for-one to raise a total of $52,859 disbursed over three charities: The Clinton Bush Fund, Yéle Haiti and Partners in Health."

Staff Editorial: Chile needs our philanthropy | The Miami Hurricane: "Also, proximity is an issue. Haiti is much closer to our campus than Chile.
But they still need aid in Chile; earlier this week the Chilean government reversed their decision and has asked for international help. Among their requests were generators, water filtration equipment and field hospitals.
Since ways of aiding the victims in Chile are not as obvious, here are some suggestions from The Miami Herald."

The Nonprofit Quarterly | The Nonprofit Quarterly | Nonprofit Newswire | Haitian Leaders Angry About Being Left Out Of Aid Decisions: "On one hand, the outpouring aid for victims of the January 12 Haitian earthquake has been steady and generous. American donations alone have topped $1 billion. On the other hand, a number of the country's leaders are unhappy with how the aid is being delivered and angry that they have little or no say how it is being used. Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive told the Associated Press, “The NGOs don't tell us ... where the money's coming from or how they're spending it. Too many people are raising money without any controls, and don't explain what they're doing with it.”"
