The colossal red mass on the radar, complete with a perfectly formed eye, was a chilling sight on our television screens.

Literally overnight, Hurricane Katrina had morphed from a powerful Category 3 storm to a calamitous Category 5 cyclone, packing a 175 mph punch and headed straight for the sink-shaped city of New Orleans.

Hampton Roads and Outer Banks residents found themselves cringing at the ominous radar images. After a steady diet of pre-Katrina news, we glanced skyward in special gratitude for Sunday’s mild blue skies and gentle sun."
