Hurricane Katrina has left much of the Gulf Coast submerged, causing catastrophic damage in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Hundreds of thousands of Americans are without power and drinking water. Tens of thousands will be homeless for weeks, perhaps months.

Many months from now, when an accurate assessment of the ruin is complete, Katrina could prove to be the costliest natural disaster in history. Preliminary estimates peg insured losses at about $30 billion, with billions more in uninsured losses."
