Disaster Relief from a Classroom - Wharton Journal - News: "Following last January's earthquake in Haiti, a group of WG10 students came together to figure out how to best respond and assist in the rebuilding process as MBAs. What began as an effort to contribute to the supply chain and logistics planning for the delivery of prosthetic limbs to crush victim amputees grew into a much larger Wharton effort.

After the spring semester ended, last year's group, which included Haitian-American Fritz Charles, WG'11, took a trip to Port-au-Prince to visit some of the organizations that are on the ground. Fritz states, 'It was a remarkable trip. It's one thing to watch the suffering on CNN, it's another is to see it in person. Truly a humbling experience. The Path Forward: A call to action for the disaster response community - Emergency Social Data Summit: "The Path Forward: A call to action for the disaster response community

Back in August we hosted a summit to examine how we might use social and mobile tools to increase disaster response collaboration amongst aid agencies, government agencies, corporations, technologists, and citizen groups. Our research suggests the public is increasingly relying on social and mobile tools in their daily lives and therefore also during emergencies. Specifically, we found that the public expects response organizations to take action on incoming social information about disasters. We also wrote a white paper, The Case for Integrating Crisis Response with Social Media, which outlined the history and current state of affairs around the public using social technologies to request help from themselves or friends and family during a crisis."

Clap, clap to industry for quake response - Techie Isles - Blogs: "New Zealand Prime Minister John Key and city mayor Bob Parker have both branded it a 'miracle' that no-one died in last weekend's Christchurch earthquake.

The magnitude of the quake was as great as that in Haiti, where over 200,000 died. So why did New Zealand escape fatalities from such a powerful disaster? Many reports credit the timing of the quake, which was in the early hours when many will have still been asleep.

But rather than being a miracle, I would say the efforts of Kiwis, particularly its tech sector, can take credit for averting tragedy in this multibillion-dollar disaster."

In the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, nonprofit organizations that rushed to the Gulf Coast to help disaster victims were hindered by copious amounts of bureaucratic red tape and federal liaisons with insufficient training to assist them.

But the federal government has been looking at ways to reduce the administrative burden on nonprofits that apply for grant programs to aid disaster victims, congressional investigators reported Monday. Nonprofit organizations told the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in interviews that the federal disaster grant process involved complicated record keeping and documentation procedures, among other complications."

4 Reasons Americans Aren't Giving for Pakistan - International - The Atlantic

4 Reasons Americans Aren't Giving for Pakistan - International - The Atlantic: "The two most common answers are the poor economy and donor fatigue. While they are certainly playing a role, these two factors provide an incomplete picture. The economy was just as bad in January as it is now, with U6 joblessness unchanged and unemployment actually decreasing from 9.7 to 9.5 percent. The much-cited 'donor fatigue' claim argues that people are currently short on expendable cash or even human sympathy after the Haiti earthquake of seven months ago. However, if donor fatigue were really such a powerful force, then the world would not have responded with an overwhelmingly generous $5 billion in aid to the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, which occurred just over nine months after the 2004 tsunami. Clearly there is something more at play. Here are four factors more plausibly contributing to the low individual U.S. giving rate in response to the Pakistan floods."

Alyssa Battistoni: Why is aid to Pakistan so slow? Because we're bad at giving.: "We shouldn't count out these factors entirely. But the disconnect between the amount people donate to disasters and the extent of devastation is nothing new. For all their compassion and generosity, individual donors are unreliable, uninformed, often illogical, and have short attention spans to boot.

Rather than corresponding to the severity of the disaster, the amount of money donated to disaster relief tends to correspond highly to the amount of media coverage. And unfortunately, the amount of media coverage doesn't typically correspond to the severity of the disaster."

Pakistan floods: Doing good works | Editorial | Comment is free | The Guardian: "Now, the less inspiring stuff. Although the UK government has promised 31m, and allocated more than half already, the European commission has pledged only a derisory €10m. The UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs is calling for $460m of aid. So far barely a 10th of that total has been pledged. The shortfall is repeated in every current UN appeal. Overall, charitable giving is in decline, and the Department for International Development's tracker survey of public attitudes shows a slow erosion of concern for the world's poor and a sharply increasing concern about corruption and ineffective aid. It might just be the short-term impact of global recession. But it looks more as if it could be the herald of a much bigger shift in opinion."

Add fundraising to list of challenges presented by gulf oil spill: "This month, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reported that more than $4 million had been raised since the deadly tanker explosion in April and resulting oil leak, a fraction of the more than $6 billion donated to the Gulf of Mexico region in the year after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. The oil spill has been called the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history.

For many, the idea of shelling out for a manmade disaster is tough to swallow; some say BP should cover the damage, even as the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund, the National Audubon Society, AmeriCares and other organizations have been pumping money into the area for wetlands restoration, animal rescue and help for fishermen and others who have lost jobs."

How You Can Help Wildlife Impacted by the BP Oil Spill - National Wildlife Federation: "The catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico caused by the April 20, 2010 explosion of an offshore oil rig has put local economies, wildlife and the Gulf's delicate coastal ecosystem at risk. Albany Student Press - UAlbany aids disaster-ridden nations: "Chile, with such disasters in the country’s recent history, was better prepared and saw less devastation and considerably smaller death tolls (approximately 1,000). Chile’s economy is also strong enough (in spite of the earthquake, growth is still expected to be about 8 percent this year, and a good credit rating and a low inflation rate of 1.5 percent means it will be easy to get loans) that the government there should be able to finance relief efforts without foreign donations.

The response to Haiti here at the University of Albany has been substantial: after seven weeks of fundraising, the student body has donated $26,429 to UAlbany’s Haiti Relief Fund, with the University Auxiliary Services matching one-for-one to raise a total of $52,859 disbursed over three charities: The Clinton Bush Fund, Yéle Haiti and Partners in Health."

Since ways of aiding the victims in Chile are not as obvious, here are some suggestions from The Miami Herald."

The Nonprofit Quarterly | The Nonprofit Quarterly | Nonprofit Newswire | Haitian Leaders Angry About Being Left Out Of Aid Decisions: "On one hand, the outpouring aid for victims of the January 12 Haitian earthquake has been steady and generous. American donations alone have topped $1 billion. On the other hand, a number of the country's leaders are unhappy with how the aid is being delivered and angry that they have little or no say how it is being used. Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive told the Associated Press, “The NGOs don't tell us ... where the money's coming from or how they're spending it. Too many people are raising money without any controls, and don't explain what they're doing with it.”"

March 1, 2010

David Adewumi’s plans for spring break don’t look like those of most other college juniors. He won’t be heading to a resort town for a week of beaches and bars, or home for a week of naps and TV-watching.

Instead, he and 10 other students from Pennsylvania State University will fly south to Haiti, on an earthquake relief trip. They expect to spend a week helping with minor medical care, food distribution and shelter building. “We know we’re a tiny Band-Aid on a huge wound,” he said. “But we’re still doing what we can to help.”"

onPhilanthropy: Articles: Reports from the Scene in Haiti: "OnPhilanthropy has been in touch with numerous aid organizations on the ground in Haiti since the January 13 earthquake, some through our CauseWired network of colleagues at NGOs, others through our affiliate Changing Our World’s client organizations. Our immediate response was to post initial reports from the field and to spread the word among our readers about nonprofits who could accept their support to assist the survivors. Amidst the terrible destruction that took over 100,000 lives and leveled massive numbers of structures, a secondary effect was being felt. The relief and development organizations based there – numbering some 9,000, by many estimates – were dealing with their own challenges: collapsed buildings, missing colleagues, lack of power and water, and suddenly, an overwhelming new set of urgent problems to address."

The Social Media Response to Disaster in Haiti | NTEN: The Nonprofit Technology Network: "Amy Sample Ward, NetSquared

When disaster strikes, we want information as soon as possible and we want to help just as quickly. How can we do that? Whether we look at mapping tools, fundraising, or missing person systems, the social media response to the January earthquakes in Haiti all leverage the powerful technology we can hold in our hands: our mobile phones. But the way we think about and turn to social media in a time of disaster is changing.

The disaster in Haiti is a perfect example of these changes: the impact of the Real-Time Web and the power of our phones."
